To learn more about the history of Pensacola and of Florida, visit downtown Pensacola, where you’ll immerse yourself in historic architecture and a variety of shows, concerts, and festivals to attend.

Downtown Pensacola is one of the city’s finest qualities. As you walk down Palafox Street, you’re mesmerized by its historic architecture, tall buildings, and the elaborate Saenger Theatre, built in 1925. The theatre hosts ballets, symphonies, classic movies on the big screen, musicals, plays, and more.  The intricate interior architecture and the stunning red carpet gives you the impression that you’ve traveled back in time to enjoy a show during the Roaring Twenties.

Located on Jefferson Street in downtown Pensacola is the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum. The museum was originally the 1908 City Hall building and has three floors of permanent and traveling exhibits. Housing historic artifacts, the Wentworth Museum holds treasures that showcase American and West Florida history.

Located nearby is the Pensacola Historic Village, where visitors can tour historic homes and Old Christ Church, the oldest Protestant church in Florida to still be on its original site. The church was used as a hospital, barracks and jail by the Union during the Civil War. See the Spanish influences in the 1805 Lavelle House and the post-Civil War 1871 Dorr House, as well as the Victorian style of the 1890s Lear-Rocheblave House.

Additionally, the Pensacola Children’s Museum just opened downtown, near the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum. The museum showcases Pensacola’s maritime history, as well as the multicultural heritage of the “City of Five Flags.”

While exploring downtown, be sure to walk south down Jefferson Street to the Pensacola Museum of Art and Quayside Art Gallery. The Pensacola Museum of Art is the only accredited art museum between Mobile and Tallahassee.
